The Best Mans’ Guide To Funny Wedding Toasts
Make sure to begin your speech with good opening lines irrespective of whether you plan on giving funny wedding toasts or a short sincere groom speech, make sure to start well. The confidence-boosting applause you receive will have your nerves disappearing in no time. Just speak from the heart and don’t include too many embarrassing stories. Don’t be vulgar and definitely do not curse, remember the audience is everyone in the room and don’t play just to your friends. Don’t be too sarcastic as this is a negative thing and this is not the day for negativity.
The grooms wedding speech doesn’t have to be super funny. What he really needs to express is love, acceptance and understanding for his new wife/family and thank all the appropriate people. Be careful though, the groom doesn’t want to fall into presenting a bad taste joke that his mother or the audience doesn’t find funny, even after the champagne has been flowing freely.
A Best Man’s wedding toast should have some humour in it. However, this does not need to be some stand up comedy act and should have a good combination of humour as well as sentiment and sincerity. Flattery also plays a major part too in successful Best Man toasts. You should mention how you met the groom and tell a funny or interesting story that involves you both. However, it’s not necessary to mention the night you both had too much to drink and took those funny pills a bloke in a bar gave you, ending the night in a hotel room with a dwarf and a donkey in a gimp mask. Seriously though… don’t forget the actual toast at the end.
The Best Man’s wedding toast doesn’t need to be one-liners and jokes, you can try to tell a short funny story about their relationship, or you can use a funny quote about marriage, there are many examples of this on the internet but one of my favourites is “my wife says I never listen, or something like that…” Another way to bring great laughter to the wedding is to read some fake emails/texts at the end of your speech, these props will work very well for you and give you something to do with your hands.
When giving a funny wedding toast, speak slowly and clearly by opening your mouth widely and don’t be afraid to read the speech or look at notes. I suggest you practice your speech in the clothes you will be wearing at the wedding. This may feel uncomfortable to start with but you don’t want to be worrying about how uncomfortable you feel on the day, so get accustomed, this way you will know exactly how to deliver the toast… jacket on, jacket off etc.
When you stand up, don’t lock your knees as this will tense all the muscles in your legs and back. If you make a mistake, don’t worry, the guests are there to enjoy themselves and probably won’t notice so don’t over do the apologies, with all the champagne flowing, most of them won’t even notice. The main thing to remember is to enjoy the wedding!
You can search for funny wedding toasts online or invest in a wedding speech e-book. I will leave you with one of my favourite closing lines “may your love be modern enough to survive the times, yet old fashioned enough to survive forever”. Good luck with your speech.
